I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. I'm very pleased with the service I've received and truly appreciate his support. If you need help with your accounts or taxes, I would highly recommend Imran.Posted on Google![]()

We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

It depends on how you are structured and how you earn. For a self-employed GP, locum, consultant, physiotherapist or carer, it typically covers bookkeeping, expense review, Self Assessment and tax planning. For a practice or clinic, it usually extends to annual accounts, Corporation Tax or partnership returns, payroll for staff, pension duties, VAT where relevant, and management information. Most healthcare clients want the compliance handled properly and, alongside it, someone to ask when a decision about structure, income or expansion comes up.
Many healthcare professionals in this position manage their own tax returns with no difficulty, particularly when the private income is small and straightforward. The complications tend to appear when private income grows, when expenses need to be split between employed and self-employed work, when there are payments on account to plan for, or when a tax enquiry arrives. At that point, having the NHS and private streams clearly separated and properly supported by records is far easier to manage with professional help in place.
NHS salary is taxed through PAYE, while private and locum fees are usually taxed through Self Assessment. Both form part of your overall taxable income, so the private side is taxed at your marginal rate once your salary is taken into account. Expenses that relate specifically to the self-employed work can generally be claimed against that income, and keeping a clear distinction between the two is what makes the return accurate and defensible.
Commonly claimed items include professional indemnity and insurance cover, registration and regulatory fees, CPD and mandatory training, specialist equipment and instruments, clinical uniforms, professional memberships and travel between sites where it is genuinely business travel. The key is that the cost must relate to your self-employed work and be supported by evidence. Expenses connected purely to employed duties are generally not claimable against self-employed income, which is why it pays to keep them recorded separately.
It depends on what is being supplied. Many medical services are exempt, but private consultations that fall outside the exemption, cosmetic or non-medical treatments, product sales, dispensing and some training or report-writing work can be taxable. Once taxable turnover approaches the registration threshold, the position needs reviewing properly, because the mix of exempt and taxable supplies affects how much input VAT can be recovered. Getting this wrong in either direction creates avoidable problems.
There is no single answer that suits every healthcare professional. Sole trader status is simpler and often adequate for locum or part-time private work. Partnerships are common among GP and dental practices where profits and liabilities are shared. A limited company can suit larger clinics or higher-earning practitioners, but it brings additional filing, payroll and reporting obligations. The right structure depends on your income levels, risk exposure, plans for growth and how you want to take money out of the business.
Yes. Payroll support covers payslips, PAYE and National Insurance calculations, tax codes, starters and leavers, statutory payments and Real Time Information submissions, with pension duties under auto-enrolment managed alongside. This is often the area where practices feel most exposed, because a missed submission or an incorrect code creates immediate issues for staff. Having it handled consistently removes that pressure from the practice manager or clinician who has been absorbing it.
Yes. Accounting support can be delivered entirely remotely, using secure digital document sharing and cloud accounting software so records, receipts and reports are accessible wherever you are working. Many healthcare clients prefer this because it fits around clinical rotas and unpredictable hours. Getting started normally means a short initial conversation about your circumstances, followed by a review of your current records and filings, and then a clear proposal setting out which services you need and what happens next.
