We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

The core disciplines are the same, but the detail differs. Healthcare accounting has to cope with income arriving from several directions at once, such as public sector sessions, private fees, locum work, medico-legal reports or teaching, each with its own paperwork and timing. It also involves expenses that are specific to clinical practice, including indemnity insurance, professional body subscriptions, CPD, specialist equipment and clinical software. On top of that, there are structural questions that come up repeatedly in healthcare, such as whether to operate as a sole trader, partnership or limited company, how associates and locums should be engaged, and how VAT applies to largely exempt healthcare services. A specialist approach means these points are anticipated rather than discovered at the year end.
It is suitable for almost anyone earning a living from healthcare. That includes GPs and private consultants, dentists and dental practice owners, pharmacists, nurses and advanced nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, counsellors and other allied health professionals, as well as care providers, domiciliary care businesses, private clinics and multi-disciplinary practices. Sole practitioners with a single income stream and larger practices with employed staff both benefit, though the emphasis differs. A sole trader may need straightforward Self Assessment support and help with expense records, while an incorporated practice will usually need annual accounts, Corporation Tax, payroll, pension administration and management information. If you are unsure where you fit, an initial conversation will usually clarify it quickly.
Multiple income sources are one of the most common reasons healthcare professionals end up with an inaccurate or late return. We begin by mapping every source of income, whether it is salaried employment, sessional work, private practice fees, locum income or something less routine such as teaching or report writing, and confirm what documentation each one produces. Employment income is usually reported through PAYE, but additional sources need to be declared and taxed correctly, and payments on account may need reviewing where income has changed. We reconcile the figures across your records before preparing the return, so nothing is overlooked and any overlap or duplication is resolved. Once the return is filed, we can help you plan for the following year's liabilities rather than being caught out by them.
Yes, and it is often one of the more valuable conversations we have with healthcare clients. Allowable expenses generally need to be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your work or practice, which covers items such as professional indemnity insurance, registration and professional body fees, CPD and training relevant to your existing role, clinical equipment and instruments, specialist clothing such as scrubs where required, clinical software and subscription services, and business mileage. Where you work from home, a proportionate share of costs may be claimable if the criteria are met. Mixed personal and professional spending, such as a phone or a vehicle, needs an appropriate apportionment. We help you identify what is defensible and put a simple record-keeping habit in place so the evidence exists if it is ever questioned.
It depends on the nature of your supplies and your turnover. Many healthcare services provided by registered health professionals are exempt from VAT, which means they do not count towards the registration threshold in the same way standard-rated sales do. However, practices often provide a mixture of services, and items such as cosmetic treatments, non-clinical products, retail sales or certain administrative services may be treated differently. Once a mixture is involved, registration and treatment decisions need proper analysis, because getting it wrong can create unexpected liabilities or unnecessary costs. We review what you actually supply, confirm the VAT treatment of each element, and advise on whether registration is required or whether voluntary registration would be advantageous, then handle the returns if you register.
Yes. Payroll for a practice can involve a genuine mix of people: salaried clinical staff, reception and administrative team members, and associates or locums engaged on arrangements that need careful review. We can operate the payroll end to end, calculating pay and deductions, issuing payslips, reporting through PAYE in real time, and managing pension obligations where they apply. Where associates or locums are engaged through their own companies, the off-payroll working rules may need to be considered, and the correct treatment depends on the specific contractual arrangements rather than a general assumption. We will talk through how each person is engaged, advise on the appropriate route and put a process in place that keeps the administration consistent month to month.
Yes. Most of what we do day to day, including bookkeeping, payroll, VAT returns and Self Assessment preparation, works perfectly well remotely. Documents and records can be shared securely, questions can be handled by phone, email or video call, and meetings arranged when something would benefit from a fuller discussion, such as a structure review or a planning conversation before the year end. What matters more than proximity is that your records reach us in a usable form and that you have a clear point of contact when a question arises. We will agree practical arrangements at the outset, including how records are shared and how quickly you can expect a response, so the working relationship feels straightforward from the start.
It usually begins with a short initial conversation about your circumstances. It helps to know how you are structured, where your income comes from, how your records are currently kept, whether you employ anyone, whether you are VAT registered and which filing deadlines apply to you. From there we can review what you have, identify anything outstanding or overdue, and set out what support would be most useful. If you have previous accounts and returns, or correspondence from HMRC that needs attention, those are useful to see early. There is no need to have everything perfectly organised before making contact; part of our role is helping you get to that point.
