We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

Self-assessment, allowable expense claims, lab fees and superannuation reconciliation for self-employed associates and private dentists.
Practice accounts, payroll for nurses and receptionists, UDA income monitoring, cash flow and profit extraction planning.
Accounting for referral-based and specialist practices, including capital allowances on equipment and VAT on cosmetic treatment.
Cash flow forecasts for lenders, company formation, cloud software set-up and registration for new and squat dental practices.
We reconcile NHS schedules, private takings, plan income such as Denplan and card receipts so you always know what the practice is really earning.
Most dental treatment is VAT exempt, but cosmetic work, teeth whitening and product sales are not. We handle partial exemption and get your returns right.
We prepare associate tax returns, claim every allowable expense from GDC fees and indemnity to CPD and lab costs, and reconcile superannuation deductions.
Payroll for nurses, hygienists and reception staff, plus auto-enrolment, statutory pay and NHS Pension submissions handled on time every month.
Management accounts that show profit per surgery, per associate and per income stream, so you can see exactly where the practice makes money.
Dental accounting is rarely a case of recording one salary and one set of expenses. A dentist's financial position can depend on contract type, the number of practices worked at, whether the practice trades as a sole trader, partnership or limited company, and how treatment income and costs are shared. The areas below are common considerations rather than universal requirements, and how each one applies will depend on your own arrangements.
We know UDAs, superannuation, associate agreements and GDC costs without being told.
Associates, principals and multi-site groups each get a different service, not a template.
One agreed monthly fee with no hourly billing and no surprises at year end.
Incorporation reviews, capital allowances on equipment and profit extraction planned in advance.
You deal with the same qualified person every time, by phone or email, not a call centre.

Take a back seat and let our London dental accountants handle everything. Switching mid-year is straightforward and you do not need to speak to your old accountant:
Reach out to us and we will discuss your practice, your contract and how we can help.
We’ll send over a simple letter to formalise our partnership and get everything in motion.
If you're switching, we’ll take care of contacting your previous accountants to make the transition smooth.
From there, sit back and relax. We’ll manage your accounts, taxes, and everything in between, keeping your practice running smoothly.
An accountant for dentists handles the accounting and tax work that follows from dental income and practice structures. That can include preparing your Self Assessment tax return if you are self-employed or working as an associate, producing annual accounts for a partnership or limited company, keeping bookkeeping up to date, running practice payroll, and advising on VAT where a practice has VAT considerations. Because dental income often arrives from more than one source, such as NHS contract payments and private fees, a good deal of the work involves making sure everything is recorded in a way that gives you an accurate picture and supports the figures reported to HMRC.
Many associate dentists are treated as self-employed for tax purposes, which means you are responsible for registering with HMRC where required, reporting your income and expenses, and paying the tax and National Insurance that follows. An accountant can help you work out which professional costs may be allowable, how your associate agreement affects what can be claimed, and how payments on account interact with your income. If you also have employed income, or you work across more than one practice, the calculations can become more involved, and having someone review the position removes a lot of guesswork.
Both NHS and private income are taxable, but they arrive in different ways and are usually recorded in different systems. NHS contract payments may be based on UDA or UOA activity and can include adjustments or reconciliations, while private treatment income tends to follow individual case fees. Keeping clear records of both, and matching them against the expenses they relate to, produces accounts that reflect what the practice actually earned. How that income is then reported depends on whether you operate as a sole trader, in partnership or through a limited company, so the treatment is reviewed against your structure.
There is no single answer that suits every dentist. A sole trader or partnership structure is common for smaller practices, while a limited company may be worth considering where profits are retained in the business, where there are multiple principals, or where you want a clearer separation between practice and personal finances. Each option carries different implications for tax, National Insurance, reporting obligations and how profits are extracted. We can talk through the practical differences based on your income, plans and the level of administration you are comfortable with, and revisit the position as things change.
Day-to-day records typically include treatment income, NHS payment schedules, associate fee splits, bank and card transactions, supplier invoices, laboratory costs, staff wages and any equipment purchases. Professional costs such as indemnity cover, GDC and professional body subscriptions, CPD and practice insurance are worth tracking separately, as they may be treated differently from general running costs. Keeping these organised through the year rather than in a rush before a filing date makes both the accounts and the tax returns considerably easier to prepare.
Yes. Practice payroll often covers a mix of roles, including receptionists, dental nurses, hygienists, therapists, practice managers and associate dentists, and each may be paid on a different basis. We can run payroll, handle the associated reporting and keep the figures aligned with your accounts. On the VAT side, dental services are commonly exempt, but a practice can still have VAT considerations around other supplies, property costs or mixed activities, so it is worth reviewing whether registration or a particular treatment applies to your circumstances.
For most dentists, the starting point is your contract or associate agreement, details of the practices you work at, your income sources, and any existing accounts, tax returns or bookkeeping records. If you run a practice, we would also look at payroll information, VAT records where relevant, and details of significant purchases or finance agreements. If you are moving from another accountant, they can usually pass across your records and past filings so the transition runs smoothly, and anything missing can be gathered as part of the initial review.
Fees depend on the level of work involved, which varies considerably between a single self-employed associate and a multi-surgery practice with employed staff and VAT considerations. We normally agree the scope first, covering what needs to be prepared, how often, and who is handling the bookkeeping, and then quote on that basis so you know what to expect. If your circumstances change, such as taking on another practice, changing structure or hiring staff, the scope and fee can be reviewed.
