I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()

It covers the same core compliance work as any other sector — bookkeeping, annual accounts, tax returns, payroll and VAT — applied to the way clinicians earn money. In practice that means dealing with mixed NHS and private income, locum or freelance engagements, practice and partnership profits, staff payroll, pension contributions and the exemptions that apply to medical services. Advice also tends to focus on structure: whether you are better placed as a sole trader, a partner or a limited company, and how to plan tax around uneven earnings.
Usually, yes. If all your income were taxed through PAYE there would be little to do, but private fees, locum payments and practice profits sit outside PAYE. That means registering for Self Assessment, reporting the income, claiming the expenses you are entitled to and budgeting for payments on account. An accountant can also check whether a limited company arrangement falls under the off-payroll working rules and make sure the right tax is being paid in the right place.
In many cases, yes, provided the cost is incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your profession and is not reimbursed by an employer. Professional body subscriptions, medical indemnity and defence union cover, required CPD, specialist equipment, professional uniforms and travel between sites are commonly allowable for the self-employed. Some costs are restricted where there is a private or personal element, so it is worth reviewing the detail before claiming.
Many healthcare services provided by registered professionals are exempt from VAT, meaning no VAT is added to the invoice and no VAT is reclaimed on related costs. Not everything falls within the exemption, however. Cosmetic or purely aesthetic treatments, certain medical reports, dispensing, retail sales and some non-medical services can be standard-rated. If your practice provides a mix of supplies, partial exemption rules may apply, and accurate record keeping becomes essential.
It depends on your income level, your contracts, the risk you carry and how you want to extract money from the business. Sole trader status is simple to run, a partnership suits clinicians sharing a practice, and a limited company can be efficient at higher profit levels — though it brings Corporation Tax, Companies House filings and, in public sector engagements, off-payroll working rules. The right answer often changes as a practice grows or changes hands, so it is worth reviewing periodically.
If you provide services through your own limited company to an NHS Trust, a GP practice or another public sector body, the off-payroll working rules generally place responsibility for determining employment status on the client rather than on you. Where the engagement is assessed as inside IR35, tax and National Insurance are deducted at source, which affects your net pay and your company position. Reviewing the contract and the day-to-day working practices before signing, and keeping evidence of how the engagement actually operates, is sensible.
Yes. Practice payroll typically includes clinical and administrative employees, part-time and sessional staff, and locums engaged through their own companies, and each needs to be treated correctly. Our payroll support covers real-time information submissions to HMRC, payslips, statutory payments such as sick pay and maternity pay, and automatic enrolment pension duties. Running payroll alongside your accounts keeps the figures consistent with your year-end returns and avoids duplicated effort.
Look for a firm that recognises the difference between clinical income streams and asks the right questions about your contracts, structure and pension arrangements rather than treating you as a standard small business. Most accounts, tax returns, payroll and VAT work can be handled remotely, with documents shared securely and meetings held by phone or video, so location matters more for convenience than for service quality. Getting started usually begins with a conversation about your role, income sources and any practice or company structures, followed by a review of your current position and a clear outline of the support available.
