We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()

It depends on your circumstances. If you are a salaried doctor whose tax is fully handled through PAYE and you have no other income, you may not need ongoing accounting support. However, once you take on locum shifts, private fees, consultancy work, a partnership share or company income, Self Assessment usually becomes necessary, and the tax position becomes more involved. An accountant can help you report everything correctly, claim expenses you are entitled to and plan for tax bills rather than being surprised by them.
Commonly claimed items include medical indemnity insurance, professional body subscriptions, required professional training and continuing development, specialist equipment used for your work, and business mileage or travel between sites where it is not ordinary commuting. There are rules around what counts as wholly and exclusively for the work, and the position differs between employment and self-employment. Because everyone's work patterns differ, it is worth reviewing your own expenses rather than assuming a standard list applies.
NHS salary is normally taxed through PAYE, so tax is deducted at source. Locum income is often treated differently depending on whether you are engaged as an employee or as a self-employed contractor. If you are self-employed, you generally report the income and expenses through Self Assessment and pay tax and National Insurance through that route. Many locums receive income under both arrangements, which is where careful record keeping and correct classification really matter.
Yes. Combining NHS and private income is one of the most common situations we deal with. The key is making sure both streams are reported properly, that any tax already deducted is accounted for, and that the resulting tax liability is understood in advance. Spreading private fees across a tax year can also affect your position, so planning during the year is usually more useful than a last-minute calculation.
There is no single answer, as it depends on your income level, how you intend to take money out of the business, your pension position and how much administration you are willing to take on. A limited company can suit some doctors with substantial private or consultancy income, while others are better served as a sole trader or through a partnership. We review your circumstances and explain the practical and tax implications of each option before you commit.
Yes, partnership accounting is a core part of what doctors need. This typically involves preparing partnership accounts, calculating profit shares, tracking capital accounts and drawings, and reporting each partner's share on their individual tax returns. Getting the allocation right matters, because each partner's tax position depends on their own share and their other income.
VAT may be relevant if your private or consultancy income exceeds the registration threshold, or if you run a practice with taxable supplies. Payroll often applies where you employ practice staff or where you are a director of your own company taking a salary. Both need to be kept up to date, as late submissions and payments can attract penalties.
Yes. Many doctors work across several sites, and accounting support does not require you to be in a particular place to receive it. We can work with you remotely, sharing documents and communicating by email, phone or video, which is often more practical around clinical commitments. If you are thinking of changing accountants, we can also help with the handover from your existing adviser.
