We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()

Many doctors can complete a straightforward tax return, but the picture becomes more complicated once you have a mix of NHS employment, private fees, locum income, consultancy work or a partnership. An accountant can help identify allowable expenses you may be missing, make sure the figures on your return are consistent with what you report elsewhere, and flag issues such as pension annual allowance considerations or the point at which a limited company might be worth exploring. If your affairs are genuinely simple, we would rather tell you that than sell you unnecessary services.
Locum work is often treated as self-employment, which means you may need to register with HMRC, keep records of your fees and expenses, and file a Self Assessment tax return. If you also hold an NHS salaried post, you will have employment income alongside your self-employed income, and both need to be reported. Related costs such as indemnity cover, travel between sites, professional subscriptions and training can be relevant, but the rules depend on whether each expense is genuinely incurred in the course of your work. We can review your circumstances and help you report the position correctly.
Commonly claimed items include medical indemnity or defence union subscriptions, GMC and royal college fees, certain training and CPD costs, specialist equipment or reference materials, and travel or mileage where it relates to your work. What is allowable depends on your employment status, whether the expense is incurred wholly and exclusively for your work, and whether you are claiming against employment income or self-employed profits. Keeping receipts and a clear record of business journeys throughout the year makes this much easier to support.
Yes. This is one of the most frequent situations doctors face, and it usually means both PAYE income and self-employed or partnership income appearing on the same tax return. We look at how the different streams are taxed, how expenses should be allocated, whether you need to make payments on account and how your position interacts with pension reporting. Getting this right helps avoid unexpected tax bills and reduces the risk of queries from HMRC.
That depends on your level of income, how much you rely on the work, your long-term plans and the additional administrative obligations that come with running a company. A limited company can be suitable in some cases but is not automatically the most tax-efficient or practical option, particularly if your income is modest or irregular. We can talk through the trade-offs, including payroll, Corporation Tax, dividend treatment and the responsibilities of being a director, before you make a decision.
Partnerships need accounts that allocate profits accurately between partners, and those figures feed into your personal tax return as well as the practice's wider reporting. Support typically covers bookkeeping for the practice, preparation of partnership accounts and profit shares, help with capital account movements and drawings, and making sure the income figures you report are consistent with what you submit for pension purposes. Because each partnership agreement and practice structure differs, we start by understanding how your practice is set up.
Yes. Much of the information we need can be shared securely online, and many doctors prefer to handle their accounting that way around busy clinical schedules. We can hold meetings by phone or video, exchange documents electronically and use cloud bookkeeping where it suits you. What matters most is that you have a clear way of getting records to us and that you understand what is being submitted on your behalf.
Switching is usually more straightforward than doctors expect. We would ask for your permission to contact your existing accountant, obtain the relevant records and information, and take over the filings that are due. It helps to have details of your income sources, previous returns and any outstanding HMRC correspondence, but we can guide you through gathering those. Being clear about what you need — whether that is faster responses, better explanation or more proactive tax planning — makes the handover smoother.
