We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

For most healthcare clients it covers a blend of compliance and advisory work: preparation of Self Assessment tax returns, annual accounts and Corporation Tax returns where a company is involved, bookkeeping and record maintenance, VAT returns where registration applies, payroll for practice staff and associates, and the tax planning that sits around all of it. In practice it also involves things that are specific to healthcare, such as separating NHS income from private fees, correctly treating indemnity insurance, professional registration and CPD costs, and advising on whether your current business structure still suits the way you work.
Yes, and it is one of the more common situations we deal with. The work involves pulling together payments from several sources, identifying which have already had tax deducted, confirming how pension contributions interact with your tax position, and then reporting the total correctly through Self Assessment. It also means keeping an eye on payments on account, because a year with a heavy workload can create a larger advance payment obligation the following January and July. Good record keeping throughout the year makes the January filing far less painful than reconstructing twelve months of shifts at the last minute.
Often, yes. Partners in a GP or dental practice have partnership accounts and an individual tax return to prepare, plus a profit-sharing agreement that needs to be reflected accurately. Associates paid on a percentage basis may have a self-employed position that needs checking against their contract. Practice principals running a limited company or a service company have additional obligations including annual accounts, Corporation Tax and confirmation statements. Where a practice employs receptionists, nurses or managers, payroll and auto-enrolment pension duties apply on top. It is worth reviewing the structure periodically, as what worked at the start of a partnership may not be the most efficient arrangement several years in.
Commonly claimed items include professional indemnity and medical defence cover, registration fees for bodies such as the GMC, NMC, GDC or HCPC, mandatory training and CPD, specialist equipment and clinical clothing, professional journal subscriptions, and business travel between sites — as distinct from ordinary commuting, which is not allowable. If you work partly from home, a reasonable proportion of household costs may be claimable depending on your circumstances. What matters is that each claim reflects a genuine business purpose and is supported by evidence, because expense treatment is one of the areas HMRC examines most closely during an enquiry.
Registration becomes compulsory once taxable turnover passes the VAT registration threshold over a rolling twelve-month period, and it can also be entered into voluntarily. The complication for healthcare is that not all services are treated the same way — much medical care is exempt, while some private or non-medical services are standard-rated. That can push a practice over the threshold sooner than expected and bring partial exemption calculations into play. Because the rules differ by service line, it is worth reviewing your turnover mix well before you approach the threshold rather than after, so you can plan for the administrative and pricing implications.
That is a regular starting point for us. We begin by establishing where things stand — which periods have been recorded, which returns or filings are outstanding, and whether any penalties or interest are accruing — then work through the backlog in a sensible order. Once records are current, we can maintain them on an ongoing basis and run payroll for clinical and administrative staff, including pension auto-enrolment duties. Bringing things up to date is usually less daunting than clients expect once the scope is clear, and it removes the pressure of facing an incomplete set of figures every time a deadline approaches.
Both arrangements work, and the choice is largely a matter of personal preference. Healthcare professionals frequently prefer remote handling because clinic hours leave little room for daytime appointments. Documents can be shared securely, questions answered by phone, email or video call, and records kept digitally through cloud accounting software, which also gives you a live view of your figures rather than an annual snapshot. Where an in-person discussion is genuinely useful — reviewing a practice purchase, restructuring a partnership, or planning an exit — that can be arranged separately.
Nothing formal is required to start. It helps to have a rough picture of how your income arrives, whether you are employed, self-employed, in partnership or operating a company, which registrations and filing obligations currently apply, and roughly where your records stand. If you have recent accounts, tax returns, VAT returns or payroll summaries, bringing those along speeds things up considerably. The first conversation is mainly about understanding your circumstances and the specific pressures you are facing, so you can be candid about what is not working — an accountant is far more useful when they can see the whole picture.
