He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()

It combines standard accounting and tax work with an understanding of how clinical income is earned. In practice that usually means preparing Self Assessment returns that correctly report NHS, private, locum or teaching income, keeping bookkeeping accurate enough to support the expenses you claim, preparing annual accounts and Corporation Tax computations for limited companies or practices, running payroll for clinical and administrative staff, and advising on VAT where private fees are involved. It also includes the forward-looking side: whether to incorporate, how to structure a partnership, how to pay yourself from a company and how to plan for tax bills rather than being caught out by them.
Part-time and locum work often creates exactly the kind of tax position that benefits from professional help, because it frequently involves more than one income source. Locum shifts may be paid through an agency, directly by a practice, or through a company, and each arrangement has different reporting consequences. If you also have employed income, the interaction between PAYE and Self Assessment, plus payments on account, can lead to unexpected bills if it is not managed carefully. An accountant can confirm how your income should be reported, which expenses are claimable and what your likely tax position looks like before the return is due.
They are reported together, but they are not treated identically in every respect. Salary from an NHS role is usually taxed through PAYE and appears on your return as employment income, while private consultation fees, medicolegal work and similar payments are typically self-employed or miscellaneous income, reported separately with expenses deducted. The combination can affect your overall tax band and your payments on account, which is why accuracy matters. Keeping clear records of each income stream, and of the expenses relating to each, makes the return far easier to prepare and much easier to support if HMRC asks questions.
Common examples include professional body and registration fees, medical defence or indemnity insurance, CPD and training that maintains or updates your existing skills, specialist equipment and clothing such as scrubs or uniforms, professional journals and reference materials, and travel between work locations where it is not ordinary commuting. Where you work from home, a reasonable proportion of household costs may be claimable. The key is that the expense must be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your work, and you should be able to evidence it. We can review your spending and confirm what is likely to be accepted.
Only if your taxable turnover — which generally includes private fees but not income that falls outside the scope of VAT — exceeds the current VAT registration threshold over the relevant period. Many clinicians never reach it, but private practice growth can change that quickly. It is worth reviewing your position regularly, because registering late can create an avoidable liability. Where you have a mix of NHS and private income, a partially exempt position may arise, which requires careful record keeping and accurate returns. We can assess whether registration is required and handle the process if it is.
There is no universal answer, because it depends on your level of profit, how you draw income, whether you employ staff, and your longer-term plans for the practice. A limited company can offer flexibility over how you take money out and may suit clinicians with higher profits or plans to reinvest in equipment and premises, but it brings additional filing and administrative obligations. Remaining a sole trader is simpler and often perfectly adequate at lower profit levels. We look at the numbers and the practical implications rather than applying a rule of thumb, and can revisit the decision as your circumstances change.
Yes. Payroll for a medical practice or clinic often involves a mix of salaried clinicians, part-time administrative staff, temporary cover and locum payments, each with different tax codes and pay patterns. We can handle payslips, Real Time Information submissions to HMRC, statutory payments and pension auto-enrolment duties, including assessing staff, managing contributions and dealing with the associated declarations. Keeping payroll accurate and on time protects your relationship with your team and avoids the administrative disruption that follows errors or late submissions.
Yes. Most of the information an accountant needs — bank statements, invoices, expense records, payroll details and correspondence from HMRC — can be shared securely online, and cloud accounting software means records stay current rather than being handed over in a box once a year. Remote arrangements work well for clinicians with irregular hours, those who split their time between sites, and practice owners who prefer not to schedule meetings around clinic lists. Questions can usually be resolved by email, phone or a scheduled call, with meetings arranged when something more substantial needs discussing. The important thing is a clear point of contact and a predictable timetable for returns and payments.
