I highly recommend Imran to anyone looking for a reliable and knowledgeable accountant. He helped me sort out a very complicated backlog of accounts and prepared my overdue tax returns with professionalism and attention to detail. Throughout the process, he was incredibly patient, took the time to answer all of my questions, and explained everything clearly. He guided me through each step and helped rectify issues that had built up over time, making what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable. We worked with a few different accountants before finally settling with Accotax, and we’re really glad we did. Their team is great. Abdul is responsive and easy to reach whenever I have a question, which makes a big difference. They take the time to understand how our business works and what our needs are. They are very knowledgeable, and when they don’t have the answer straight away, they take the time to look into it and get back to us quickly. Anum, who looks after our account on a day-to-day basis, including reconciling invoices and preparing the annual accounts, is amazing. She is professional, efficient, and follows the processes we have put in place together. She's also very quickin getting back to us whenever needed. We’re very happy to work with her and hope to continue doing so for as long as possible. Overall, Accotax has made our accounting experience much smoother and easier. We see them as a long-term partner as our business continues to grow. I would 100% recommend them.Posted on Google![]()

From day one, they've made what can often be a complicated and stressful part of running a business feel straightforward and hassle-free. A special mention has to go to Anum, who has been friendly, incredibly responsive, and genuinely cares about providing the best possible service. No question is ever too much trouble, and she consistently goes above and beyond to make sure everything is dealt with efficiently. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone looking for an accountant they can genuinely trust.Posted on Google![]()

The work tends to cover both compliance and advice. On the compliance side, that includes Self Assessment returns for doctors, dentists, pharmacists, therapists and other practitioners, annual accounts and Corporation Tax for practices and clinics trading through a limited company, partnership accounts and returns, VAT returns, bookkeeping and payroll. On the advisory side, it includes reviewing business structures, planning profit extraction and drawings, assessing allowable expenses, and helping with issues specific to healthcare such as mixed NHS and private income, NHS pension contributions, professional registration costs and the VAT treatment of different healthcare supplies.
They suit anyone earning income through healthcare work, whether employed, self-employed or operating through a practice. That includes GP partners and salaried GPs, locum and private-practice doctors, dentists and dental practice owners, pharmacists and pharmacy contractors, nurses, carers, consultants, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals, as well as clinics, medical practices and care businesses. Salaried employees may only need a straightforward Self Assessment if they have additional income, while practice owners and clinics usually need a broader service covering payroll, VAT, accounts and tax planning.
If you receive income that has not had tax deducted through PAYE — for example locum fees, associate shares, private consultation income or self-employed earnings — you will usually need to report it through Self Assessment. Even where tax has been deducted, additional income sources can mean a return is still required. The important thing is keeping clear records of sessions worked, fees received, and the expenses directly connected to that work, so the return reflects your actual position rather than an estimate.
Yes. NHS salary and pension information, private fee income, locum earnings, teaching income and any other sources are all reported together, but each needs to be recorded accurately and supported by the right documentation. Where you have both employed and self-employed income, the interaction between PAYE and the Self Assessment calculation needs checking carefully. Keeping the records separate throughout the year makes the return far more straightforward and reduces the chance of missed income or duplicated expenses.
Common claims include professional body and registration fees, professional indemnity insurance, CPD and training that maintains existing skills, specialist equipment and instruments, clinical clothing such as scrubs and uniforms, business mileage between sites, and a proportionate share of home costs where genuine business use applies. Whether an expense qualifies depends on your circumstances and the rules around wholly and exclusively business purposes. Getting this right matters in both directions — claiming things that do not qualify creates risk, while overlooking legitimate costs means paying more tax than necessary.
Many medical and healthcare services are exempt from VAT, but not all of them. Cosmetic and aesthetic treatments, certain non-medical services, retail sales in a pharmacy and some products can be standard-rated. Where a practice makes both exempt and taxable supplies, partial exemption rules may apply and VAT recovery on costs needs to be worked out properly. This is an area where the detail of what you provide determines the correct treatment, so it is worth reviewing before registering or changing your service mix.
There is no single answer that suits every healthcare professional or practice. Sole trader status is simple and often works well for individual practitioners, partnerships are common among GP and dental practices where profits are shared, and a limited company can be appropriate for larger practices or businesses with multiple income streams and reinvestment plans. Tax rates, National Insurance, profit extraction, administrative obligations and liability all differ between structures. A review of your income levels, plans and circumstances is the sensible starting point before making a change.
Yes — much of the accounting process can be handled remotely, with documents shared securely and questions answered by phone, email or video call. Many healthcare clients prefer this because it fits around clinic hours and avoids unnecessary travel. To get started, the first step is a conversation about how you work, what you currently have in place and what you need help with. From there, CruseBurke can review your records and returns, identify what needs attention and set out a clear plan for the support required.
